France • Motorcycle and scooter market 2022

Despite a year 2022 marked by supply problems for many manufacturers and an unfavorable general context, the French motorcycle and scooter market held up rather well, recording a drop of only 6.2% in sales compared to 2021.
In the lead for the second year in a row, Honda dominates the market ahead of Yamaha and BMW. Within the Top 10 manufacturers, Triumph and Ducati are even progressing, while the situation is more difficult for Kawasaki, KTM, Piaggio, Harley-Davidson and Suzuki.
In 2022, 182,576 new motorcycles and scooters were registered. A figure down slightly compared to 2021, when there were 194,552 registrations (- 6.2%). Marked by supply problems, component shortages, significant inflation and a rather anxiety-provoking general context, the year 2022 nevertheless presents an honorable accounting record for the entire French motorcycle and scooter market.
In detail, 52,619 new scooters were registered in 2022, representing a market share of 28.8%. It is, by far, the most efficient category, like the 125 cm3 cylinder capacity (motorcycles and scooters combined), which with 49,573 units was the most sold in France ahead of vehicles from 500 to 749 cm3. (35,370 units), and 1000 cm3 and more (32,833 units).
As for manufacturers, Honda still dominates the ranking with 30,947 registrations, ahead of Yamaha (29,453 units) and BMW (20,929 units). Interestingly, on this podium, only the German brand is increasing (+ 2.84%), while Honda and Yamaha are seeing their sales decline (respectively - 12.08% and - 8.20%). Great performance also from Triumph, which climbs to fourth place with 10,718 registrations (+ 6.25%), ahead of Kawasaki (9,817 units and a drop of 24.53%)!, KTM (7,523 units, - 23.5 %), Piaggio (5,944 units, - 13.71%), Harley-Davidson (5,087 registrations, - 8.54%), Ducati (4,583 units, + 4.86%), and Suzuki (4,414 units , - 11.70%). A Top 10 that Royal Enfield narrowly misses, with 4,281 registrations of new motorcycles in 2022.
Among the most significant increases, we note the good progress of Aprilia (+ 63.14% with 3,749 vehicles sold), the Chinese brand Zontes with 2,366 registrations, up 64.87% in 2022, and the manufacturer of electric scooters Silence, which, with 1,868 registrations, progressed by 275.10%.
